Katie’s grandmother contacted me about gifting a “coming of age” portrait session to her granddaughter and I thought to myself what a fantastic idea! I had never considered this type of session but I was excited she asked. We met at a location that is dear to Katie and her grandmother, Ohana Family Camp on Lake Fairlee, Vermont. I love this camp and the people who work there.  It provides many opportunities for gorgeous photos, even when it’s an overcast day as it was during this session. There is the area near the lodge that provides vistas of the surrounding mountains and a short walk down to the waterfront provides more opportunities for gorgeous photographs. We almost didn’t go down to the water since it was getting dark, but we got lucky and ran into a friend on the grounds who offered a golf cart so we quickly seized the opportunity and I’m so glad we did. The water was so serene and reflecting gorgeous light.

Since this was my very first “coming of age” portrait session, it makes me wonder why more people don’t do these types of sessions. It’s a BIG milestone in a young person’s life and the changes between middle school and high school are drastic ones. It has certainly made me think about documenting this time for my own girls when they reach this milestone. It’s such an exciting time and one that should be documented. I’m so glad Katie’s grandmother contacted me for this session. It has brought light to how important and special this time is and that we should try to preserve it as best we can.
